Teleportation
A Wither Compass takes you to a Lodestone you have already visited. Build a matching platform at each end, charge the compass with a Nether Star, then gather your group for departure.
Build the platforms
Each platform needs 49 blocks of one material, arranged as a flat 7 by 7 square, one block thick. Place a Lodestone on top of the centre block. The foundation block beneath the Lodestone is part of the 49.
Both platforms must use the same block type. You cannot mix materials within a platform, even if every block is accepted by a beacon.
There are no extra tiers. A larger beacon pyramid does not improve a teleportation platform.
Covering the foundation
You can conceal the metal or gem blocks under a decorative floor and leave just the Lodestone visible. Slabs, carpet, a full block, or a full block with carpet all work. Leave enough headroom for every traveller.
The boarding area follows the 7 by 7 footprint. Your feet must be on the foundation or its covering, no more than 1.25 blocks above the foundation's top. An upstairs room does not become part of the platform.
The particle outline appears above the covering, so the boarding area remains visible. The destination does not need the same decorative block, but its floor and headroom must allow the matching arrival positions described below.
Choose a material
Every material can carry a group of players. Its other properties apply to the whole journey.
| Foundation | Reach | Preparation | Alongside players |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron | 4,000 blocks in the same dimension | 6 seconds | None |
| Gold | 4,000 blocks in the same dimension | 2 seconds | Animals and monsters |
| Emerald | 4,000 blocks in the same dimension | 8 seconds | Animals, monsters and villagers |
| Diamond | Any distance in the same dimension | 6 seconds | Animals and monsters |
| Netherite | Any distance, including between dimensions | 6 seconds | Animals and monsters |
| Rose gold, with Additional Additions | 4,000 blocks in the same dimension | 6 seconds | Animals and monsters, plus ridden living mounts |
Regional range is the straight-line horizontal distance between the two Lodestones. Height does not use up the range. Preparation starts once the destination is ready.
The accepted materials follow Minecraft's beacon foundation rules. Copper is not accepted. If another mod adds a foundation material without a specific teleportation effect, it uses iron's range and preparation time. It still connects only to the exact same block type.
Charge a Wither Compass
- Visit your destination and use an ordinary compass on its Lodestone.
- Put that linked compass in an anvil's first slot and one Nether Star in the second.
- Take the Wither Compass. Charging costs one experience level.
- Carry it to a matching departure platform.
An unlinked compass cannot be charged. You can name the compass to identify its destination, and that name survives charging and travel.
The Wither Compass keeps the ordinary compass appearance and Lodestone tracking. Its name and Charged tooltip identify the stored charge. A linked ordinary compass also has the vanilla enchanted shine, so the shine alone does not tell you whether it is charged.
After a successful journey, you receive the ordinary compass, still linked and named. Only the Nether Star charge is spent. Recharge it at an anvil for another trip to the same destination.
One charge pays for the entire group, including eligible animals, monsters, villagers and mounts. There is no separate fee per passenger.
Start a journey or join a group
Stand in the platform's boarding area and use the Wither Compass on the departure Lodestone. Keep that compass in the same hand during preparation.
To join someone else's departure, stand in the area and use the same Lodestone with an empty main hand. Each player must join explicitly. Simply walking onto an active platform never enrolls a player.
The destination appears briefly above the hotbar, followed by the countdown. Particles mark the platform boundary and the travellers taking part. There is no fixed player limit.
- Leaving the area or taking damage removes a passenger from that departure.
- Changing mounts also removes a mounted passenger.
- If the person who started the journey leaves, takes damage, disconnects or changes the held compass, the whole journey is cancelled.
- You cannot join two departures at once.
At arrival, players receive Blindness for three seconds.
Arrive in the same place
Every traveller keeps their exact horizontal offset from the Lodestone, including fractional block positions. Arrival height adjusts to the destination floor. Looking direction is preserved. Positions are taken at the instant of departure, so you can move within the boarding area while the countdown runs.
For example, if you stand two blocks east and one block north of the first Lodestone, you arrive two blocks east and one block north of the second. A player standing beside you remains beside you. All travelling creatures and eligible mounts follow the same rule.
There is no rotation, snapping to block centres or Nether portal coordinate scaling. Crossing dimensions with netherite keeps the same offset.
Every exact arrival position must be clear. If a wall, low ceiling, unsafe floor or another creature occupies one traveller's destination, the whole journey is cancelled and the compass keeps its charge. The system does not move that traveller to a different free square.
The two platforms can have different floor heights. You can leave a bare platform and arrive on slabs, carpet or a full decorative block, and travel back again. Your horizontal position stays the same, while your feet align with the destination surface. If you depart above the floor, that extra height is preserved. The arrival must remain within the boarding height, with enough headroom for both a mount and its rider.
Animals and monsters
Gold, emerald, diamond, netherite and rose gold also carry animals and monsters. Creatures in the boarding area when preparation begins are included automatically and receive particles. Iron carries players only.
Keep the creatures in the area until departure. Leaving or taking damage removes them from that departure; creatures arriving after preparation begins must wait for the next one. Hostile mobs remain hostile during preparation and after arrival.
Creatures travel individually, keeping their relative positions and stored data. Creature passengers dismount, and boats or minecarts stay behind. An animal carrying a player follows the mounted-travel rules below, so it cannot bypass player enrollment.
Emerald: bring villagers
Villagers inside an emerald platform's boarding area when preparation begins are included automatically. Both adults and babies can travel, and selected villagers receive particles.
Keep them inside the area until departure. A villager that leaves or takes damage is removed from that departure. Villagers brought in after preparation has begun must wait for the next journey.
Villagers keep their trades, level, trade experience and inventory. A villager riding in a boat or minecart is dismounted for the trip; the vehicle stays behind. Each selected villager needs a clear arrival at its own relative position, just like a player.
Only emerald platforms include villagers. Wandering traders follow the same emerald-only rule.
Rose gold: stay on your mount
With Additional Additions installed, a rose-gold platform can take players on their ridden living mounts. The rider must control the mount and be its only passenger. Each player still joins the departure explicitly.
The rider remains mounted, and the mount keeps its saddle and equipment. The mount's position determines the matching arrival, with room checked for both mount and rider.
Unridden animals and monsters also join automatically on rose gold. Its additional benefit is keeping enrolled players on their living mounts. Boats and minecarts stay behind. Other platform materials require players to dismount before joining.
Sounds and visual cues
The ritual uses familiar Minecraft sounds and particles:
- A beacon sound when the platform activates.
- A Lodestone sound when a player joins.
- Rising amethyst chimes during preparation.
- A respawn anchor sound at departure and an Enderman sound at arrival.
- A beacon deactivation sound if the journey is cancelled.
These sounds use the Blocks volume setting. The moving outline and small particle rings show the boarding area and who is travelling, including when the foundation is covered.
If the journey does not start
| Check | What to do |
|---|---|
| Foundation | Check all 49 blocks, including the centre beneath the Lodestone. Use one material and one layer. |
| Matching endpoints | Both platforms need the exact same foundation block. |
| Compass | Link it to the destination before charging, then keep the charged compass in hand. |
| Range or dimension | Use diamond for longer travel within a dimension, or netherite to cross dimensions. |
| Boarding | Stand on the platform or its covering. Passengers use an empty main hand. |
| Arrival | Clear each matching position, including the floor, headroom and any creature standing there. |
| Mount | Use rose gold for a ridden living mount, or dismount before joining. |
| Destination unavailable | Retry once the destination can be loaded. Loading times out after about ten seconds at normal server speed. |
Failed or cancelled journeys do not discharge the compass. A charged compass keeps its destination coordinates even if the Lodestone is broken, allowing you to repair the platform and Lodestone at the same position and try again.
