Elytra Flight
Firework rockets give no thrust while gliding. Campfires do everything instead.
Launching
- Wear an elytra.
- Stand on a lit campfire and crouch. You take no fire damage in the smoke.
- Wait one charge interval, 30 ticks by default.
- Release sneak.
You are thrown upward with your wings forced open and a burn of directional thrust. During the burn, your velocity is pulled toward wherever you are looking, converging on roughly 1.5 blocks per tick.
Hearth power
How hard you are thrown depends on what you built around the campfire.
Every one of the eight blocks orthogonally or diagonally adjacent that is itself an updraft block adds +1. A hay bale underneath, making it a signal fire, adds +4. Maximum is 12.
| Hearth | Power | Launch velocity | Burn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lone campfire | 0 | 0.45 | 40 ticks |
| Campfire with a hay bale | 4 | 0.85 | 60 ticks |
| 3x3 signal hearth | 12 | 1.65 | 100 ticks |
A campfire with any hearth power emits the tall signal column whether or not there is hay underneath, plus extra plumes as it grows. Good launch pads are visible landmarks. That is intentional.
Updraft corridors
While gliding, the game scans downward up to 38 blocks. Passing over a lit updraft block gives you lift, scaled by the hearth's range and your distance above it, capped at a total upward speed of 1.0.
Range is 10 + 2 per hearth power, so a maxed hearth reaches 34 blocks.
A line of hearths along a route is a flight corridor you can ride indefinitely. Building those corridors is the replacement for holding right click with a stack of rockets.
Smokestack
An elytra chest enchantment, levels I to III. Each level lets you bank one campfire charge.
- Banking: crouch in the smoke. You gain one charge per interval, up to your Smokestack level, with a rising campfire crackle per charge held.
- Spending: press the boost key in the air, Space by default. One charge becomes a fifteen-tick directional dash.
- Requirements: at least ten ticks of gliding, and a sixty-tick cooldown between dashes.
- Losing them: standing on the ground while not gliding, not armed and not in a smoke column zeroes your charges. Otherwise they persist across saves.
Charges show as pips under your crosshair while gliding or while crouching on a campfire.
Cloudskipper
The alternative elytra enchantment, levels I to III. Mutually exclusive with Smokestack.
Above y=100 it returns part of the drag your glide is losing rather than adding thrust. The effect grows with altitude and saturates around y=230, where Cloudskipper III returns roughly 0.6% of your horizontal speed per tick.
Smokestack rewards route infrastructure. Cloudskipper rewards altitude. Pick one.
